The Northern Territory government has decided to allow a full-scale onshore gas industry to go ahead in the Beetaloo Basin about 500 kilometres south-east of Darwin.

It says it is satisfied the recommendations of an independent inquiry into fracking have been met and that the industry will play an important role in Australia's energy transition.
But the decision is being criticised by traditional owners, environmentalists and scientists who warn of catastrophic damage to the climate.
